As you can imagine, the money you spend on these little luxuries is very important to the salon industry, meaning they will do whatever it takes to keep you coming back for more. While sometimes "whatever it takes" is going above and beyond excellent service, cleanliness and technique, it can also mean cutting corners and deceiving the salon layman in order to keep costs down and business booming.
And not to totally scare you, but what's supposed to be a luxurious treat, can sometimes turn into your worst nightmare -- think skin eating diseases and infections. While yes, millions of women get manicures each year and don't experience any serious or life-threatening side effects, you'd be naive to believe that it could never happen to you. Nail salons that have been insufficiently cleaned or performed bad sanitization practices, as well as ones with inadequately trained nail technicians, could be a breeding ground for bacteria and a dangerous place for you to "unwind."
Which is why we went straight to the pros who know -- nail technicians and a podiatrist in order to uncover the secrets nail salons don't want you to know. Read on to learn how to save money at the salon, your nails and possibly your life.

What's best for my computer: Hibernate, sleep, or shut down?
Sleep mode vs. shutting down
Peters notes that your work process will determine whether it’s more efficient to use “Sleep” mode or simply shut down the computer. “It is never fun to have to consistently wait any amount of time if the shut downs are too frequent,” he says. "‘Sleep’ requires more power, but it boots up faster, while ‘Hibernate’ uses less power, but takes longer to come online.” That same logic applies to shutting off your computer completely.
“Your computer will become obsolete before you wear out your computer by turning it on and off a lot,” he adds. “It also doesn't take more energy to start a computer than to keep it running.”
Sleep mode requires a constant, though reduced use of power (0-6 watts). Peters also notes that colorful screensavers do nothing to conserve energy. Accessing your computer remotely with the Wake on LAN feature also can drain the power.
To get the most for your money, Peters advises adjusting power settings so that it automatically goes into Sleep/Standby mode after about 15 minutes of inactivity, and then shut it down at the end of your day.
Bionic battery life
To get the most out of your computer battery, Peters says to you have to give it a workout. Don’t keep your machine plugged in to an outlet. Instead, discharge the battery daily.
Size does matter
By purchasing a laptop, Peters says that you are ahead in the energy-saving game. Laptops use about 15-60 watts, while desktops use 65-250 watts — plus another 15-80 watts for a monitor.
He also adds that you can further conserve energy by using an LCD monitor and ditching the high-end video card unless it’s absolutely necessary. Also, turn off printers and other peripherals when they are not in use.
To kill “vampire power,” TreeHugger.com suggests purchasing a power strip. With all peripherals connected to one source, it’s easy to simply flip the switch on power hogs any time.
Establish a backup process
In addition to Peters’ great advice about conserving energy, I discovered the hard way that it also pays to save backup versions of your work. Invest in an external hard drive to hold your digital music library, special photos, and other key documents. Frequent backups ensure that your data doesn’t die with your laptop.
While you are in the process of backing things up, create an emergency file (on good old-fashioned paper) that contains your computer’s serial number along with other key data such as your credit card numbers and phone numbers to reach each company, along with contact info to your insurance company. Access to that information is vital, particularly in the event of an accident, fire, computer theft, or other catastrophe.
Peters warns that those key pieces of information are not safe on your computer. If you are like me and absolutely need a digital holding space for those nuggets of information, he suggests sites like LastPass as your online vault.
Happy computing!

10 Tips For First-Time Travelers
Newbie Traveler, a young man making his first trip abroad. Now that the noob has successfully crossed borders without causing an international incident, he's compiled this list of 10 bits of advice he has for other people making their first trek abroad.
1. Get a passport: Kind of a gimme, right? But the Newbie Traveler polled his friends and found that 80% of them didn't have a valid passport. And really, the trip won't happen if you can't get on the plane.
2. Not all power adapters are created equal: If you're traveling to both the UK and mainland Europe, you'll find you need two — or a truly universal — power adapter to make sure you can plug in everywhere.
3. Make the necessary phone calls before your trip: Some phone calls you'll definitely want to make before departing, include your bank, cell phone, health insurance.
4. Meet a local: If you don't know someone in at your destination, sites like CouchSurfing.org can hook you up with people who would love to show you around their town. Says, the noob, "I did a quick search for people in the London area and over 1,000 results came back."
5. Don't be ashamed to use a map: Don't care about whether or not people think you're a tourist. Getting lost can be a lot worse than getting laughed at.
6. Never forget you're in another country: "Be open minded and ready for new experiences while showing respect for your host country," says the Newbie Traveler, who suggests the World Customs & Cultures app for iPhone users.
7. Fight jet lag: Don't waste your time sleeping during the day in your hotel room. Try to sleep on the flight and do your best to adjust ASAP to your new time zone.
8. Use public transportation: "If the locals can figure it out, you can too."
9. Be in the moment: "Don't keep your head buried in guidebooks," says the NT. "You're traveling to participate, for the opportunity to experience other cultures and ways of life. You want to look back on your journey and remember that you really existed there—if only just for a moment."
10. Oh, and bring comfortable shoes: Sometimes you'll have to sacrifice fashion for comfort, especially if you plan on hours of walking each day.
What other tips have you all learned from your travels?
